Trader Joe’s is recalling 16 ounce jars of its Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, as it may possibly be contaminated with salmonella. Trader Joe’s removed the recalled peanut butter prior to the recall, however notes that customers may still have it on their shelves.
The recall affects the 16-ounce plastic jars only. All expiration code dates are included in this recall, and the expiration date is stamped below the lid.
There are currently twenty-nine cases of salmonella in eighteen states that have been linked to the recalled peanut butter. Three cases have been linked to Massachusetts, one in Rhode Island, and one in North Carolina.
Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. It is most dangerous to children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems. More than three-fourths of those who have become ill were children under the age of 18.
